Good News - Wi-Fi Calling launched by Jio and Airtel
Wi-Fi Calling with Jio and Airtel
This is really a Good New for those users who were not able to make phone calls from their home/office due to poor network connectivity. Both Jio and Airtel have launched their WiFi Calling service in India. But what is this Wi-Fi Calling and how it works and most importantly how you can enable this service on your mobile phone? Let’s discuss this in detail.
What is Wi-Fi Calling?
It is a normal call that is transmitted through Wi-Fi i.e. you are placing a call by using Wi-Fi and for this you need not install any extra application. In short, in Wi-Fi calling, the call will be done through Wi-Fi. That means, the way normal calls performed through cellular networks, now the signals of the call will not go to cell tower instead the signals will go to Wi-Fi and this is the whole process of Wi-Fi calling. And the good thing is that you need not install any additional app or perform any extra process.
Most important thing is that the call will be performed through your existing phone number and the receiver will see your phone number.
The biggest advantage of Wi-Fi calling is that in some areas there is poor quality of signals or there are high chances of call dropping or sometimes you need to come out from your house to place a call, so Wi-Fi calling has solved this problem of poor quality signal i.e. the problem of signal dropping will be resolved with Wi-Fi router.
Therefore, if you have Wi-Fi of any company and your mobile phone enables Wi-Fi calling and your operator supports Wi-Fi calling, then you can use Wi-Fi calling without any problem.
It is also known as VoWiFi means Voice over Wi-Fi. In this audio quality is very high and the calls performed is similar to HD calls.
So, it can be observed that Wi-Fi calling is a very simple concept.
Do You Have to Pay Extra Charges?
But the question is if you need to pay some additional charges or do recharge. It is not so, nowadays, all the companies like Airtel or Jio that have enabled Wi-Fi calling, don’t charge any additional money, and it will work according to your current plan. That means, if you place a call in the normal network by giving some money, e.g. 6p/sec, then the same rate will be charged in Wi-Fi calling or if you are placing a call free of cost, then similarly you can place a call free of cost in Wi-Fi calling. Therefore, there are no additional charges and your current plan will be continued.
Currently, Jio and Airtel prepared a plan for the whole country and it may happen that in the coming time, there will roll out in whole India. For now, it is limited to some areas but within a short period whole India will be covered.
Can The Wi-Fi Of Other Companies Be Used?
The most important thing is you can use the Wi-Fi of any company to place a call in spite of any company’s mobile network. When Airtel enables Wi-Fi calling for the first time in India, it forces to use the Wi-Fi router of Airtel to place a call through Wi-Fi calling. After Airtel, Jio has enabled Wi-Fi calling and allows the user to use other company’s Wi-Fi to make a call. Only after this, finally, Airtel enables the Wi-Fi calling and this allows its users to use the Wi-Fi of other companies as well.
Therefore, we can conclude that you can use the Wi-Fi of any company to place a call through Wi-Fi and its independence from the type of mobile network i.e. whether it is Airtel or Jio; both companies allow using any Wi-Fi router. Also, you can place a call through Jio mobile number by using Airtel’s Wi-Fi or you can place a call through Airtel mobile number by making the hotspot of Jio. So, this is a very good thing that you can use any other company’s Wi-Fi.
Which Phones Support VoWiFi?
If observed theoretically, that all the VoLTE mobile phones that have come in the market from the last few years, support VoWiFi. Now, its depend upon mobile phone manufacturing companies whether they enable VoWiFi in their phones or not because the chipset is capable, only the company have to enable the VoWifi feature by using software update and after that, you can enjoy the benefits of Wi-Fi calling.
Also, these days scenario is, some phones support Wi-Fi calling only for Jio and some phones support Wi-Fi calling only for Airtel. That means, for now, the companies have decided to cover only specific phones that will support Wi-Fi calling and in future this list will grow. For instance, in today’s time, Samsung Galaxy Fold supports Wi-Fi calling of Jio but not of Airtel. Similarly, a series of One Plus phones support Airtel Wi-Fi calling but not Jio Wi-Fi calling.
So, the companies are deciding to cover which phones. They want to cover a large number of phones so that maximum phones support Wi-Fi calling and obviously in the near future, it may happen that Jio or Airtel officially role out the phones that support Wi-Fi calling. That means, all the compatible phones will support Wi-Fi calling and the phone manufacturing companies that haven’t enabled the Wi-Fi calling in their phone may enable by using software updates in the coming time.
How to Enable Wi-Fi Calling?
If you have Wi-Fi calling enabled phone, then steps to enable Wi-Fi calling are:
· For Android Device
§ Go to Settings
§ Click on Connections
§ Select the Jio Sim and Enable the Wi-Fi Calling Switch
§ Restart the phone.
If Wi-Fi calling is supported in your area or is connected to Wi-Fi enabled network, then you will see the sign of Wi-Fi calling or symbol of VoWiFi.
· For iOS Device
§ Go to Settings
§ Click on Phone
§ Click on Wi-Fi Calling
§ Enable the Switch
Almost all the iPhones launched after iPhone 6S support Wi-Fi calling.
Your mobile data will not be used. If you want you can also turn off the mobile data but if we talk about Wi-Fi data, then definitely it will get utilized because in Wi-Fi calling, Wi-Fi data is utilized in these calls and by utilizing this data, you can perform the high-quality call. You can also easily use slow speed Wi-Fi e.g. 1Mbps, for making a call because the company has done settings such that it takes less bandwidth and provide very high quality and also take fewer data.
Also, it is recommended that enable both VoLTE and VoWiFi on your phones that means due to some reason if your phone lost Wi-Fi connection, then automatically it will switch to VoLTE and your call will not be disconnected and you will perform the normal 4G VoLTE call and most importantly you won’t get the idea that when the call gets transferred from VoWiFi to VoLTE.
Soon Wi-Fi calling will become a significant part of people’s lives and if the Wi-Fi calling has not arrived in your area yet, then wait, soon it will be in your area as companies like Airtel and Jio are trying their best to achieve their targets.
